Bringing the Outside In

Hi. I'm Karen, and I'm addicted to purchasing fall magazines.

Hi, Karen.

It's true. I just can't help myself. I see those beautiful, glossy covers with inviting tables adorned with various gourds, candles, and flower arrangements, and the next thing I know I'm flipping through them over lunch. Add Facebook and Pintrest to the mix, and I go on all fall decorating spree.

This year, the big theme was 'bring the outside in.' I did that last year, when I mixed leaves with the scented pinecones in baskets in the foyer. It was wonderful to be greeted by such a beautiful sight and scent. So wonderful, I decided to recreate the basket this year.

But I wanted to do more. And then I had a wonderful idea. Two years ago, when Frankenstorm hit the east coast, several branches from my parents' white birch tree had come down. My father made Yule logs for me and my mother. It hit me; why should the log adorn my dining room table only in December? So I hit my local candle shop and bought off-white tapers and some fall garland. I put the tapers in, wound the garland at the base of the candles, and Presto! The Autumn Log was born!

It's been on my dining room table for two months now, and I smile and think of my dad every time I see it.
